Surgery by Surgeons

The Utah Ophthalmology Society as advocates for high quality, safe eye care for all Utah patients, strongly believes that eye surgery should only be performed by medically and surgically trained ophthalmologists. Nationally only Oklahoma, Kentucky, Louisiana and Tennessee allow optometrists, who did not graduate from medical school and did not do a surgical residency, to perform eye surgery. Optometrists gained this surgical privilege through legislation. Each year, optometrists in other states push for legislation allowing them to perform surgery.
